Yes, I did it. I made a commitment to do 60 Bikram Yoga classes in 90 days... long, hot, time-consuming Bikram Yoga.
Why!? Because I need it. I need the discipline, determination, commitment and challenge in my life. I need my body, joints, & muscles to wake up and feel alive. I need my heart to pound until it feels like it's coming out of my chest! I need the balancing positions and to sweat it out.. whatever "it" is. I need my mind to be clear. Not just for me, but for my clients and students, friends and family. I need to the be the best I can be. I want to be that!
So, when I got home I went to my accountability buddies, patted my legs, and announced, "This is my Home, my Divine Vehicle, this (my body) is what I will be living in for the next, however many years, and I want to take better care of it. The feedback was, "You look great! What do you want to do with your body?" I'm tall, so it's kind of easy to hide extra pounds, and I don't complain too much, so most people don't know my body aches.
Anyway, I explained my intentions and I made a commitment to exercising everyday. I said I would alternate between weights at the gym and cardio at the beach. But, came the "But"... "But", after cardio, running, jogging, even just walking at the beach my hip hurt. "But", I have resistance to the gym. I don't know why... it's so mechanical, there's so much metal... I don't really know what to do; and after every work-out my body just doesn't feel good. :(
Then, I remembered, my past failed attempts at Bikram (about 3-4 years ago) and for some reason thought I'd try it again. And, to my surprise, it feels like everything I wanted and needed in my exercise routine wrapped up in a nice, neat & pretty bow...
The Mount Pleasant Bikram Yoga Studio is only a 5 minute drive. The owner, Hanna, is so sweet! If I forget anything like a mat, water, etc.. they have it! I get to, as they say, "Sweat the body and quiet the mind"... 100%! And I get to have one of their amazing instructors guide me through the whole thing. I don't have to "think" about what to do next, I just follow along. I am super-motivated by my friend, Polly, who has been going for years, (she's 52 and looks 18), the other students in the class, and by the encouragement I receive. It's a "90 minute, open-eyed, meditation" and I'm loving it! Whao! Whoda thought!?
Will Bikram Yoga be the magic pill? Well, I've lived long enough to know there is not one, but for now I am loving it! In the last 2 weeks: My right hip feels better! There is a difference in my breathing. And I feel more calm and clear in my mind. I am craving things like water, coconut water, juices and Kombucha (which they have on tap!) Yeah, I sort of feel like I've found my Holy Grail of exercise, for now anyway.
To top it off, this week starts their annual "Summer Challenge"! So, why not!? I'm usually not up for these sorts of things, but this time I am... So, I will keep you posted on the journey, my body; and commitment to keeping it happy and healthy! For now, all signs are pointing to Bikram.
