Maybe What We Need is Simply a Return to Nature
A Return to Nature
Many of us spend much of our lives indoors, surrounded by walls, screens, artificial light, noise, schedules, and constant stimulation. At the same time, we may struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, overwhelm, disconnection, or simply the feeling that something essential is missing. Ecotherapy invites us to consider our relationship with the natural world as one meaningful part of our overall well-being...

What is Ecotherapy?
Ecotherapy is an umbrella term for therapeutic practices that intentionally incorporate nature and our relationship with the natural world into healing and well-being. It recognizes that we are not separate from nature and that disconnection from the natural world may be one of many factors affecting our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Nature Herself Can Be Healing
Sunlight. Fresh air. Water. Trees. Flowers. Animals. Soil beneath our feet. The changing seasons. There is something restorative about returning our attention to the living world around us. The nervous system may begin to settle, the mind can become quieter, the breath may naturally deepen, and we may begin to reconnect with a rhythm that feels more natural than the hurried pace of everyday life.

With Nature Much Can Be Resolved
There is healing in listening to the breeze rustle the leaves, the music of the birds, water moving along the shore, or the almost imperceptible movement of a flower in the wind. Sometimes we don't need to immediately analyze or solve what we are experiencing. We need enough quiet to hear ourselves again.

Ecotherapy and Holistic Counseling
In Holistic Counseling, we can intentionally welcome nature into the therapeutic process while still attending to whatever has brought you to counseling. Depending upon your needs and what is appropriate, we might meet outdoors, walk together, sit beside the water, practice nature-based mindfulness or grounding, or simply allow a peaceful natural environment to become part of our conversation.

Adding Nature Elements to Your Energy Healing Sessions

Ecotherapy and Energy Healing
Flowers, leaves, feathers, stones, crystals, shells, or other natural objects may be intentionally placed on or around the body during an Energy Healing Session. We may work with their energy, symbolism, beauty, texture, color, or vibration as part of the healing experience. For me, this is another way of welcoming the energy and vibration of nature into our work together.

Nature Awakens Creativity
Creativity offers another beautiful doorway into ecotherapy. We might draw a flower, photograph patterns in nature, write about a tree, create a mandala from fallen leaves, journal beside the water, write a poem after watching the sunrise, or simply notice the colors and shapes around us. We don't have to create something "good." The creative act can simply become another way of paying attention.

Bringing Nature Inside
Ecotherapy doesn't require a forest, mountain, or ocean. We can meditate on a single flower, leaf, feather, crystal, stone, or shell. Plants can share the room with us. We can open a window and listen to rain. Natural sounds can accompany meditation. Something as simple as tending a plant on a windowsill can become a small daily relationship with the living world.

The Medicine of a Flower
Imagine spending several quiet minutes with a single flower. Notice its colors, shape, texture, fragrance, shadows, imperfections, and extraordinary intricacy. You don't need to analyze it or make anything happen. The flower asks nothing of you. For those few minutes, perhaps you don't need to ask anything of yourself either.

Ecotherapy at Home

Meditating with a Simple House Plant can Connect Us to Nature
Simple Ways to Practice Ecotherapy at Home
  1. Watch the sunrise or sunset.
  2. Take a slow walk through the woods or practice forest bathing.
  3. Walk barefoot on the earth.
  4. Sit beneath a tree, touch its bark, or simply observe it.
  5. Lie in the grass and look at the sky.
  6. Listen intentionally to birds, wind, rain, waves, or other sounds of nature.
  7. Meditate with a flower, leaf, feather, shell, stone, or crystal.
  8. Bring living plants and flowers into your home.
  9. Grow herbs, flowers, or food on a windowsill, patio, or in a garden.
  10. Talk to your plants, care for them, and notice how they change.
  11. Explore plant music or recordings
  12. Spend quiet, present time with an animal companion.
  13. Sit beside a lake, river, ocean, stream, or fountain and listen to the water.
  14. Look at the moon and stars.
  15. Create art, journal, write poetry, or meditate outside.
  16. Notice the moon cycles and changing seasons consider what their rhythms may be teaching you.
  17. Put your phone away for a while and allow nature herself to become the experience.

No "Right" Way to Connect with Nature
One person may feel restored walking barefoot beside the ocean. Another may discover something sacred in caring for a single houseplant. Someone else may sit at an open window listening to the rain. Ecotherapy isn't about creating an idealized outdoor lifestyle or turning nature into another item on a wellness checklist. It is about remembering and nurturing our relationship with the living world in ways that are accessible and meaningful to us.
