What does love look like here?

The Art of Love

There was a time in my life when I believed the most important question I could ask was: What is Love?... That question eventually became the title of my first book, What Is Love? My Question... God's Answer.

As I searched for the answer through meditation, prayer, recovery, therapy, creativity, nature, and life itself, something unexpected happened.
The answer I received was not really an answer at all.
Instead, it was another question.
The better question became...

How may I be of service?
As I sat with that question, the answer became... "See the Light in all beings, including yourself."
For years, I have carried those words with me.
I have certainly not mastered them.
In fact, many days I find myself forgetting them altogether.
But I continue returning to the practice.
I often ask the Universe:
"Help me to see the world and its people through Your eyes."
Some days that feels effortless.
Other days it feels impossible.
Perhaps Love has never been about perfection.
Perhaps it has always been about returning.
Returning to compassion.
Returning to presence.
Returning to the Heart.
Returning to seeing beyond fear, beyond judgment, beyond separation.
Recently, yet another question has gently found its way into my heart.
It arrived quietly during one of my morning meditations.
Not demanding an answer.
Simply asking...

What does Love look like here?
I would like to allow this new question to permeate my days.
When I'm counseling a client.
When I'm creating a painting.
When I'm walking in nature.
When I'm sitting quietly with someone I love.
When I'm facing something difficult.
When I'm celebrating something beautiful.
What does Love look like here?...
Sometimes the answer is listening.
Sometimes it is speaking.
Sometimes it is setting a boundary.
Sometimes it is extending grace.
Sometimes it is resting.
Sometimes it is laughing.
Sometimes it is simply being present.
I have come to believe that perhaps Love is not something we finally define once and for all...
Maybe Love is something we continually discover.
Something we practice.
Something we become.
Something we ARE... if we will look and see.
Something that keeps inviting us to reconsider, to look again.

The Art of Love
That may be why I chose the name The Art of Love for this website.
Art is never finished.
Every painting teaches the artist something new.
Every book invites another expression.
Every poem reveals another layer.
Perhaps Love is like that...
Perhaps The Art of Love is not arriving at the perfect definition.
Perhaps it is living the question.
Again.
And again.
And again.
So today, rather than offering you an answer, I'd like to offer you the same question I am asking to guide my own life...

What does Love look like for you?
Wherever you are.
Whatever you're facing.
Whoever is standing before you...
What does Love look like here?
I wonder what answer you will discover...
